WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC serves children 0-5 as well as woman who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum. Children in WIC receive a medical screening, nutritional assessment, nutrition education, and checks for nutritious foods that are high in vitamins and minerals needed by young children. WIC is a USDA wellness program. Children in WIC are screened for lead and receive Farmer's Market Checks for Iowa grown fresh fruits and vegetables every June. WIC also provides supplies for breastfeeding to give infants the best possible start.

WIC, Women Infants and Children, is a nutrition program that provides nutrition counseling and education, breastfeeding support (including breast pumps), checks to buy nutritious foods and health referrals. WIC serves Iowa residents who are pregnant, breastfeeding (up to 12 months) or who are 6 months postpartum and children under 5 years old. WIC professionals (nurses and dietitians) meet with participants to assess diet and health history, identify nutritional needs, provide counseling and determine appropriate foods. WIC is a leader in breastfeeding promotion and support. Breast pumps are available, for free, to WIC participants. WIC serves families at 185% of the federal income limits. A family of four may earn over $34,000 and qualify. Families with medically compromised children who are over income may also qualify. The WIC program in Boone County is provided by Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA). MICA's WIC program is available in Boone on the 1st Wednesday and 2nd Tuesday of each month.
